Will consolidating my debts save money?
Only if the new rate and fees are lower and the loan ends no later than your debts would. In the example above, one loan saves $3,296 over 3 years and almost nothing over 5.
What is the monthly payment on a $50,000 consolidation loan?
$1,161 a month over 5 years at 13.90% p.a. fixed with no fee, with $69,649 paid back in total. That's the rate ANZ and ASB advertise.
Can anyone get a consolidation loan?
No. Every lender checks your credit and that you can afford the repayments. ASB, for example, wants an income over $20,000 a year before you can apply online.
