What interest rate should I use?
Use the rate a lender has quoted you. If you don't have a quote yet, start with a lender's advertised rate for that kind of loan, and swap it in when you get one.
Personal loan rates run from 7.99% p.a. at Harmoney to 29.99% p.a. at Gem by Latitude. Where you land depends on your credit history and what you can afford.
On a $20,000 loan over 5 years, that's $94 a week at the low end and $150 at the high end. A broker can tell you which end you're likely to get.

Weekly repayments with the lender's fee added to the loan, at advertised rates checked 21 Oct 2026. Each lender sets your rate after checking your credit and what you can afford.
Ask a broker what rate I'd getAre fees included in the result?
Only if you enter them. The starting result shows no fees, because Westpac and ASB don't charge an establishment fee on a personal loan.
If a lender adds a fee to your loan, you borrow it too and pay interest on it. On $20,000 over 5 years at 13.90% p.a., fees add $208 to $480 to what you pay back. So check the lender's fees and type them in before you compare.

Does paying weekly or fortnightly save interest?
Yes, a little. Paying weekly instead of monthly saves $86 on a $20,000 loan over 5 years at 13.90% p.a., because each payment brings the balance down sooner.
Paying half your monthly amount every fortnight saves more. You end up making 13 monthly payments a year instead of 12, which saves $985 and clears the loan about 6½ months early. If you're paid fortnightly, it's easy to set up with your bank.
| How you repay $20,000 | Each repayment | Total interest | Paid back in total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $464 | $7,860 | $27,860 |
| Fortnightly | $214 | $7,800 | $27,800 |

How much is a $20,000 loan per month?
$464 a month over 5 years at 13.90% p.a., with $27,860 paid back in total. Over 3 years it's $683 a month, and over 7 years $374 a month.

How are loan repayments calculated?
Your loan is split into equal repayments. Each one pays that period's interest first, and the rest comes off what you owe.
Early on, more of each repayment goes on interest. On $10,000 over 3 years at 13.90% p.a., your first $341 monthly repayment is $116 interest and $225 off the loan. By the end, almost all of it comes off the loan.
That's why paying extra early on saves the most. The calculator does the sums for you, and you can see the full schedule under the result.

Does a loan calculator affect my credit score?
No. Everything happens on your device, and nothing you type is stored or sent. There's no box for your name, date of birth or IRD number.
The broker form under the result is separate. Compare Loans only passes on your loan details if you fill it in and send it, and even then it isn't a loan application.
Can a broker check the rate I'd get?
Yes. A licensed broker can ask lenders for the rate you'd actually be offered, based on your credit history, income, deposit and security.
On $20,000 over 5 years, 13.90% p.a. costs $214 a fortnight. At 7.99% p.a. it's $187 a fortnight, before a $150 fee.
Send the broker form and the broker starts from your numbers. No one can promise approval, because every lender runs its own checks.
13.90% is the Westpac and ASB standard rate and 7.99% is Harmoney's lowest, checked 21 Oct 2026. Brokers must hold, or work under, a Financial Advice Provider licence.
What else should I know about loan calculators?
What is a loan calculator?
It works out your regular repayment and the total you'll pay back. You give it the amount, the interest rate, the term and how often you pay. The Compare Loans calculator also takes fees and extra repayments, works backwards from a repayment, and can compare two loans side by side.
Are loan calculator results accurate?
Yes, for the numbers you type in. A lender's quote can still be a little different, because the lender sets your rate and fees.
How much can I borrow?
A calculator can't tell you for certain, because each lender decides from your income, spending and debts. You can work backwards from a repayment, though: $80 a week for 3 years at 13.90% p.a. pays off a loan of about $10,194. Work out what a repayment you can manage would pay off.
Does a longer loan term cost more?
Yes. Each repayment is smaller, but you pay more in total. A $20,000 loan at 13.90% p.a. costs $24,512 over 3 years and $31,333 over 7 years, which is $6,821 more.
How long will it take to pay off my loan?
Type in your balance, rate and repayment, and the payoff date shows under the result. A $5,000 balance at 13.90% p.a., paid at $80 a week, is gone in 69 weeks. Add an extra repayment to see how much sooner you'd finish.
Can I use this calculator for a home loan?
Yes, though the mortgage calculator is quicker. It starts at 30 years and the 4.99% p.a. 1-year fixed rate at ANZ, ASB and TSB, so a $600,000 loan is $742 a week. A fixed rate only lasts for the fixed term, so your repayment changes each time you refix.
What happens to my repayments if the interest rate goes up?
They go up too. If 13.90% p.a. rises to 15.90% p.a., a $20,000 loan over 5 years costs about $10 more a fortnight, and $1,250 more in total. Try a rate 1 or 2 points above your quote to see what a rise would mean for you.
