# How much can I borrow?

Type the repayment you can manage, and see the loan it would pay off. Works for a home or anything else.

## Why might a bank lend me less than this?

Because a bank checks you could keep paying if rates rose. At a 7.00% test rate, the same $600 a week pays off $391,057, which is $94,162 less.

Banks also count your living costs and every other debt. Most of their home lending has to stay within 6 times your income before tax.

A licensed broker can tell you what each bank would lend you before you fill in an application.

| Rate | $600 a week pays off |
| --- | --- |
| 4.99% | **$485,219** |
| 7.00%, an example test rate | **$391,057** |

$600 a week over 30 years. 7.00% is an example, not a bank's published test rate; banks don't publish theirs. Rates checked 21 Oct 2026.

## Questions about borrowing

### How much can I borrow if I earn $100,000?

Most bank lending stays within 6 times income before tax, so up to $600,000 of total debt on that rule alone, home loan included. The bank then checks a higher test rate and your living costs, which usually brings it down.

### How much can I borrow on a personal loan?

Westpac lends up to $50,000 unsecured and Harmoney $2,000 to $100,000 (checked 21 Oct 2026). $100 a week over 5 years at 13.90% pays off about $18,722.

### Does the result include my deposit?

No, it's the loan only. Add your deposit to see the price you could look at.
